FAQs

What is Pilates? Pilates is a physical fitness system developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. It principally aims to balance the body, improve mobility, teach controlled fluid movement and bring focus to the breath and alignment. It is famous for strengthening the "core" or "powerhouse" but is actually a system that trains the whole body in an integrated, rhythmical, dynamic way through precise, intentional movements.

What is unique about Lee Pilates? Lee Pilates, is a contemporary Pilates practice - meaning we do not adhere strictly to the teachings of Joseph Pilates, but structure our classes more on current movement science and body mechanics research. In traditional Pilates, there is a great deal of forward flexion of the spine. Lee Pilates focuses more on the posterior chain to counterbalance faulty movement and postural patterns frequently found in contemporary times.

How is this course structured? Pilates Mat begins with fundamental classes (Level 1) to teach you important alignment and body mechanic principles key to achieving desired results. The series progress through intermediate classes (Level 2) into advanced Pilates work (Level 3). All programs are developed using Lee's proprietary Track System which ensures that your body is moved through all planes and ranges of movement for balanced strength and muscular development.

Do I need equipment? In addition to a Pilates mat, you will need a theraband, Pilates ring and small soft ball. If you do not have this equipment you can easily do the work without it. These tools are assists in creating variety and helping students to achieve the intentions of the exercises and correct muscle innervation. If you have them, great! If not you can proceed without.

What if I have already done Pilates before? This is a contemporary, science-based methodology. Lee's Pilates programming while honoring the spirit and memory of Joe Pilates is not classic - rather it is constantly evolving with research. We strongly suggest all new students start at the fundamental level to gain a deep understanding of the method, innervate important postural and stability muscles and develop a deep understanding of this approach and technique.

What if I have never done Pilates? Great! We are thrilled to introduce you to this wonderful mind-body practice. Start at the fundamental level and also be sure to watch the educational videos for a deeper understanding of body mechanics posture and proper muscular innervation.

Are there any contraindications from taking this series?
While we aim to show many modifications in our work, there are a few conditions that would limit movement abilities in such a way that this would not be the most beneficial program. If you have osteoporosis and have been told not to do forward flexion of the spine, this is not the best program for you - check out HIIT and Pilates DBT. If you are pregnant and cannot lie down on the mat on your back or belly, this is not the right time to start this program.  Try our Prenatal courses.  If you have any serious medical condition check with your doctor before beginning an exercise program, and if you have acute injury - wait to start.
